Yes, you know it’s time to hydrate when your face is flaky or to tone down the moisture level when your face is shiny but have you gone below the surface to find out what your skin really needs to be the healthiest it can be….

June 27th is your chance as we are welcoming Aveda Skin Care Specialist, Tracey Lipska, to the Institute of Beauty and Wellness to meet with guests one-on-one for a complete skin analysis with a woods lamp. A woods lamp exposes conditions that are not visible to the naked eye through a black light and will allow Tracey to fully educate you on the current condition of your skin and what you can do to maximize its potential.  Each guest will receive a complimentary makeup refresh immediately following.

A $25 reservation fee is used to secure your 45-minute spot and can be redeemed in full towards Aveda product purchases. To secure your reservation call 414.227.2889. Space is extremely limited.

Student Blog – Janell Geason

We were fortunate enough to host AVEDA Global Artistic Director, Makeup, Janell Geason, at The Institute of Beauty and Wellness for makeup education. We reached out to Esthiology student, Sara, to share her experience.

Janell Geason, Aveda Global Artistic Director for Makeup, provided us with an inspiring and creative lesson on the artistry of make-up. Not being confident in professional make-up application, I took a great deal of knowledge with me that will equip me when working with clients. For example, understanding the color theory is more important than one might think. It is essential to consider one’s eye color and wardrobe when applying makeup to enhance a client’s features.  Another thing you may not think of, I know I didn’t, is the texture of one’s make-up.  I really loved her demonstration on how to get flawless complexion as it much more about building up layers rather than covering the face with a glob of foundation. As a result, the individual’s face looked flawless!

janell 3 ibw

Also the individual’s makeup looked immaculate through the use of contouring. I don’t know about you, but I have been turned off by contouring when I saw a picture of Kim Kardashian. She basically paints on a whole new face. Geason’s approach to contouring was much subtler and natural in comparison to some of the celebrities’ methods. Not only did I learn to use light colors with grey hints, but how to use them at the top of the cheek bone rather than along the whole cheek bone, which let’s be real, it’s just not natural.

janell 5 ibw

Aveda is known for its non-synthetic, natural make-up. However, this may limit how much is available to you at while you’re applying makeup. Geason taught us how to be versatile in makeup application. For example, to make an eye-color bolder, I learned that what you apply on underneath the eye shadow will determine the outcome. To bring out a bolder color, you simply put concealer on the eye before the eye-color. Lastly, make-up does not need to be used for what it is intended for, but be used in a multitude of ways. We saw techniques that used eye pencil as eye shadow and Mosscara as eye liner. The real lesson today was that make-up is an art and Geason is certainly an artist.

The Difference 50 Hours Can Make

50 hours may or may not seem like a significant amount of time. The state of Wisconsin recently lowered it’s licensing hour requirements for Cosmetology from 1800 clock hours, to 1550 hours starting in the year 2016. At the Institute of Beauty and Wellness, our Cosmetology program will run for 1600 hours. Why? Guest Education. Here is why guest education makes a difference to us and current students/graduates of the institute.

12957653_1180020378675188_585628093879578542_o

hair stylist, business owner, fashion week show leader, and educator, Jon Reyman

It Will Give You a Stronger Understanding of the Business

We bring in guest educators from a wide array of topics. These topics ranging from business subjects such as bench marking and hospitality to global educators that are experts in their field such as Mary Brunetti, Ted Gibson, Vivienne Mackinder, Nicholas French, Jon Reyman, Ian Michael Black and many, MANY more that share their knowledge from tons of years of experience behind the chair and educating globally… There is never a shortage of activity.

You Will Make Global Industry Connections

Artists come nationally, as well as internationally, to guest educate at the Institute of Beauty and Wellness. Click here to read about how an IBW graduate landed a job in NYC from a connection she made with a guest educator.

You Are Entering in to a Lifelong Benefit

Students at the Institute of Beauty and Wellness are entered into a lifelong educational benefit with our education fund. Upon graduation, you are welcome to come back to any education we host at no cost for the rest of  your life. Does it get much better than that? #LearningNeverEnds

Yoga Teacher Spotlight: Jason

Maybe you have heard: We are offering daily yoga classes! At the Institute of Beauty and Wellness we value any moment we can take for mindfulness and our well being. Our yoga classes are centered around breathe work, meditation and asana poses. Click here to view our daily yoga class schedule. Read our Q&A with one our yoga instructors below. #WeLoveYoga

Q: WHAT IS THE BENEFIT OF YOUR STYLE OF TEACHING?

JASON: I pay attention. I want everyone to get the most out of their practice, so I watch and make adjustments or give corrections when needed. A teachers job is to encourage growth and development, and you can’t do that if you’re just posing at the front of the room.

Q: DO YOU HAVE TO BE AN EXPERIENCED YOGI TO ATTEND YOUR CLASSES AT THE INSTITUTE OF BEAUTY AND WELLNESS?

JASON: Not at all. I would obviously encourage beginners to steer clear of advanced classes, but right now, my classes are open to everyone.

Q: HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN PRACTICING YOGA?

JASON: I’ve been practicing for a little over twenty years. To be honest, I stuck with it originally because of how it changed my body. But, as time has gone by, the deeper benefits are what keep me coming back. Yoga has made me more self-aware, more comfortable in my body, and calmer in spirit.

Q: WHO HAS BEEN YOUR GREATEST MENTOR/TEACHER?

JASON: Peggy Hong, hands down. She was a driving force behind my decision to teach yoga, and offered me so much. Introducing me to some of the best teachers, and pushing me to become the best I could be. She’s an awesome person and a spectacular teacher, and I would never have made it without her.

Q: WHAT IS THE MOST REWARDING PART OF BEING A YOGA TEACHER?

JASON: I get to do something that doesn’t harm anyone or anything, and works for the betterment of everyone involved. I see people progress and become more deeply involved in yoga. Some of my students are now successful teachers themselves, and that’s pretty rewarding right there. Plus, I get to wear pajamas all day!

Q: WHY IS YOGA SO IMPORTANT FOR THE TIMES WE LIVE IN?

JASON: We live in a time when so much is expected of us. Do more, give more, achieve more, sacrifice more. And we face adversity from every direction. Our world needs a lot of work, and it’s on us to do that work. It’s vital that we have a touchstone to help us wipe away the demands of our lives and remember that we are doing fine, we’re going to be okay, and to help us remember what really matters. And that’s what yoga is all about. Just take a breath and chill out for an hour. Get back to ourselves. We don’t have to do it all right now.

Massage Instructor Spotlight – Jeffery

We are thrilled to feature one of our talented Massage Therapy Instructors, Jeffery, for this month’s instructor spotlight. Read more about our massage program here.

In the year 2000 I have a medical condition, Bells Palsy, which paralyzes one side of the face.  There is very little that regular medicine can do for Bells Palsy, so in desperation I tried Reiki (a Japanize energy-based bodywork).  Reiki really helped my Bells Palsy and I experienced it as great for stress-reduction, too.  This lead me to an interest in bodywork and I became a Reiki Master which eventually lead me to Massage Therapy school because I wanted to learn more about Anatomy, Physiology and Pathology.

Since becoming a Massage Therapist I have studied over 30 different modalities (forms of massage) including reflexology, sports massage, cranial sacral therapy, thai bodywork, cupping, shamanic healing, trigger point massage, lymphatic massage and integrated energy work.   I believe there is a massage technique that will work for everyone, not matter what their issue!  Mind-body-spirit wellness through bodywork is my passion.

In addition to being a Wisconsin licensed and Nationally Board Certified massage therapist, I am on the Board of the American Massage Therapy Association (AMTA)- Wisconsin Chapter, I am certified as an Aveda Massage Educator, an approved continuing education provider by the National Certification Board of Therapeutic Massage and Bodywork.

  1. WHAT IS THE MOST REWARDING PART ABOUT BEING AN EDUCATOR?

I love to see students succeed! I often get to teach the first day of class when everyone is just starting out filled with hopes and dreams and often a little anxiety.  I love seeing the students master the various subjects and techniques throughout their program.  Very often I also get to be part of the graduation ceremony and celebrate the students’ achievement.   In just a few months of education the student is transformed into a competent professional.

      2. IN YOUR OPINION, WHAT IS THE BIGGEST POINT OF DIFFERENCE THE INSTITUTE OF BEAUTY AND WELLNESS OFFERS?

We are an Aveda school.  Integrating our mission “to care for the world we live in” and “setting an example for environmental leadership and responsibility” into our education and classroom each day makes our education not only about knowledge and skill, but also about passion and purpose.  Our products are second to none and our students leave with skills in beauty and retail that are not usually a part of massage programs.

3. WHAT IS ONE OF THE MOST FUN EXPERIENCES YOU HAVE HAD AT IBW?

Ellen DeGeneres created an app called “Heads Up!”  The game is a lot of fun.  You can buy a version to create your own.  I made one for us to review Pathologies (diseases).  It is so much fun to give clues and yell out answers.  Plus, it makes you think fast!  The students who played the game all scored well on their pathology exams.  Though I do feel slightly nerdy for taking something so fun and making it into a study  tool!

4. DO YOU HAVE ANY ADVICE FOR SOMEONE CONSIDERING THE BEAUTY OR WELLNESS INDUSTRY AS A CAREER OPTION?

Believe in yourself! It is never too soon or too late to enter into the beauty or wellness field.  The world is filled with  people longing to be touched by our services.

5. WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE THING TO DO AROUND THE CITY OF MILWAUKEE?

I love the Historic Third Ward and surrounding area.  I moved to be closer to IBW last April.  There are so many great restaurants (Amilinda, Club Charlies, Swinging Door and Camino are my favorites).  There is never a shortage of things to do with art and entertainment all around.  You may see me walking around– you’ll recognize me because I’ll wearing all black.

We are thrilled to welcome NAHA Winner and Creative Director of all Ladies & Gentlemen Salons and the Brown Aveda Institutes, Sal Misseri to the Institute of Beauty and Wellness on Tuesday, October 25th. Misseri has led hair design for Chicago Fashion Week 2014 and Latino Fashion Week Chicago 2013, and has styled backstage at New York Fashion Week with the likes of Christian Siriano, Porsche Designs, Kimberly Ovitz, Behnaz Sarafpour, and Ann Yee. He was named one of the top 30 colorists under 30 in the U.S. in 2014, and has won numerous awards, such as Estetica’s Choice Men’s Hairstylist of the Year (2013) and NAHA Newcomer of the Year (2012). He was recently named the Big Shot Creative Colorist of the Year for North America at the Behind the Chair One Shot Awards and is a nine-time NAHA finalist in four categories since 2012, including being a three-time finalist for Hairdresser of the Year. Sal will be teaching dry hair cutting and how to offer a guest several hair styles while they are in your chair.

Read our Q&A with Sal below.

Q: WHAT IS YOUR IDEAL VACATION AND WHY?

SAL: Anywhere that involves the beach, sun, and preferably no cell service so that I can actually relax and not deal with work.

Q: WHO DO YOU WATCH FOR INSPIRATION? HOW DO YOU STAY INSPIRED?

SAL: I watch a lot of science and nature shows, and movies. I find a lot of inspiration from other areas of art and science and I try to find a way to tie them together. Gravity is a big inspiration for me at the moment and has helped me create a few of the new images we recently released.

Q: ON A PERFECT DAY I SPEND IT…

SAL: Working with my team.

Q: WHAT WOULD YOU SAY IS THE KEY TO SUCCESS IN THE BEAUTY INDUSTRY?

SAL: There are 3 things I have always tried to focus on. Surrounding myself with successful people that I want to be like. Working harder than the next person. Staying true to yourself and not compromising.

Q: WHO ARE THE TOP 3 STYLISTS YOU WOULD LOVE TO WORK WITH?

SAL: Sam McKnight, Guido, Angelo Seminara

Q: HOW DO YOU USE YOUR TALENTS TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE?

SAL: I try to raise the standards for everyone I come in contact with. I believe that everyone can be successful but most lack the tools or confidence to reach their full potential so I try to help guide as many people as I can. I also do a lot of hair in charitable ways, I love giving the client confidence in themselves at what could be their lowest point.

Q: HOW DO YOU MAINTAIN BALANCE?

SAL: I’ll have to get back to you on that when I figure it out, it’s hard for me to find balance when you are trying to build something that is bigger then yourself.

DETAILS

Sal’s presentation is from 9am-12pm on Tuesday, October 25th.

To RSVP, please email admissions@ibw.edu, or call 414.227.2889

Class is complimentary for all IBW alumni, salon owners and managers. All other registrants have a $25 cost.

Q: WHO HAS BEEN YOUR FAVORITE GUEST EDUCATOR SO FAR?

STEFANIE: Sally Rogerson was mind blowing to watch perform such precision cutting. She followed a youthful passion and is a force in the industry.

Q: WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE AVEDA PRODUCT CURRENTLY?

STEFANIE: Phomollient Styling Foam is my favorite Aveda product. It allows men and women the ability to have full, flowing styles without a sticky heavy finish and it holds up to the elements.

Q: WHAT IS YOUR DREAM JOB AFTER GRADUATION?

STEFANIE: My dream job… I love the movement and the chaos of the fashion industry. I look forward to the opportunity to travel as a barber/stylist. Stylists, bands, models and actor/actresses. I will use that platform to be involved with charitable events.

You Will Make Global Industry Connections

Artists come nationally, as well as internationally, to guest educate at the Institute of Beauty and Wellness. Click here to read about how an IBW graduate landed a job in NYC from a connection she made with a guest educator.

Massage Instructor Spotlight – Jeffrey
