We are thrilled to welcome NAHA Winner and Creative Director of all Ladies & Gentlemen Salons and the Brown Aveda Institutes, Sal Misseri to the Institute of Beauty and Wellness on Tuesday, October 25th. Misseri has led hair design for Chicago Fashion Week 2014 and Latino Fashion Week Chicago 2013, and has styled backstage at New York Fashion Week with the likes of Christian Siriano, Porsche Designs, Kimberly Ovitz, Behnaz Sarafpour, and Ann Yee. He was named one of the top 30 colorists under 30 in the U.S. in 2014, and has won numerous awards, such as Estetica’s Choice Men’s Hairstylist of the Year (2013) and NAHA Newcomer of the Year (2012). He was recently named the Big Shot Creative Colorist of the Year for North America at the Behind the Chair One Shot Awards and is a nine-time NAHA finalist in four categories since 2012, including being a three-time finalist for Hairdresser of the Year. Sal will be teaching dry hair cutting and how to offer a guest several hair styles while they are in your chair.
Read our Q&A with Sal below.
Q: WHAT IS YOUR IDEAL VACATION AND WHY?
SAL: Anywhere that involves the beach, sun, and preferably no cell service so that I can actually relax and not deal with work.
Q: WHO DO YOU WATCH FOR INSPIRATION? HOW DO YOU STAY INSPIRED?
SAL: I watch a lot of science and nature shows, and movies. I find a lot of inspiration from other areas of art and science and I try to find a way to tie them together. Gravity is a big inspiration for me at the moment and has helped me create a few of the new images we recently released.
Q: ON A PERFECT DAY I SPEND IT…
SAL: Working with my team.
Q: WHAT WOULD YOU SAY IS THE KEY TO SUCCESS IN THE BEAUTY INDUSTRY?
SAL: There are 3 things I have always tried to focus on. Surrounding myself with successful people that I want to be like. Working harder than the next person. Staying true to yourself and not compromising.
Q: WHO ARE THE TOP 3 STYLISTS YOU WOULD LOVE TO WORK WITH?
SAL: Sam McKnight, Guido, Angelo Seminara
Q: HOW DO YOU USE YOUR TALENTS TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE?
SAL: I try to raise the standards for everyone I come in contact with. I believe that everyone can be successful but most lack the tools or confidence to reach their full potential so I try to help guide as many people as I can. I also do a lot of hair in charitable ways, I love giving the client confidence in themselves at what could be their lowest point.
Q: HOW DO YOU MAINTAIN BALANCE?
SAL: I’ll have to get back to you on that when I figure it out, it’s hard for me to find balance when you are trying to build something that is bigger then yourself.
